Internet and Gaming Addiction

Internet and Gaming Addiction

Internet and Gaming Addiction is characterized by difficulty in controlling internet use or digital gaming behavior, increasing time spent on these activities, and significant impairment in daily life functioning. This issue, which is becoming increasingly common among children and adolescents, can negatively affect academic performance, social relationships, and sleep patterns.

Children and adolescents with this condition often struggle to limit screen time, may postpone responsibilities, and show reduced interest in activities outside of the internet or gaming. Family conflicts, social withdrawal, declining academic performance, and disrupted sleep patterns are among the most frequently observed symptoms. Over time, withdrawal from real-life activities and social isolation may develop.

Internet and gaming addiction may be associated with underlying emotional needs such as stress, anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem, or social skill difficulties. Therefore, it is important not only to restrict the behavior but also to understand the underlying causes. Family attitudes, boundary-setting skills, and structured daily routines play a key role in this process.

The goal of intervention is not to eliminate screen use entirely, but to establish healthy and balanced usage habits. Psychotherapy, family counseling, and structured daily schedules are among the effective approaches. With appropriate support, children and adolescents can learn to use the digital world in a controlled manner and restore balance across other areas of their lives.
