Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that begins in childhood and affects attention, impulse control, and activity levels. Every child may occasionally be active or inattentive; however, in ADHD, these symptoms are pronounced, persistent, and impact daily functioning in a way that is not consistent with the child’s age and developmental level. Difficulties in academic performance, inability to complete tasks, frequent mistakes, losing belongings, and an inability to remain seated are among the most common symptoms.

ADHD affects not only academic functioning but also the child’s social relationships and self-esteem. Frequent warnings, difficulty following rules, and challenges in peer relationships may, over time, lead to feelings of inadequacy. During adolescence, in addition to attention problems, impulsive decision-making, difficulties in time management, and motivational issues may become more prominent.

The causes of this condition are not linked to a single factor; it is believed that genetic predisposition, brain development, and environmental influences all play a role. An ADHD diagnosis is made through a comprehensive clinical evaluation. In this process, not only the child’s behaviors but also information obtained from family, school, and social environments are taken into consideration.

The treatment process is planned according to the needs of the child and the family. Psychoeducation, behavioral regulation strategies, and collaboration between family and teachers are essential components of treatment. When necessary, medication can also provide effective support. With early diagnosis and appropriate intervention, children with ADHD can realize their potential, develop their strengths, and maintain a healthy developmental trajectory. Receiving support makes the process more manageable for both the child and the family.
