Eating Disorders

Eating Disorders in children and adolescents are psychiatric conditions characterized by abnormal changes in eating behavior, distorted body image, and intense concerns related to food and weight. These disorders can have significant effects on both physical health and psychological development.

The most common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. These conditions may involve excessive fear of weight gain, restrictive eating, uncontrolled binge episodes, or compensatory behaviors such as vomiting or excessive exercise.

The development of eating disorders may be influenced by genetic predisposition, individual traits, body image disturbances, social pressures, and family dynamics. During adolescence, heightened sensitivity to body image can increase the risk of developing these disorders.

Treatment involves psychotherapy, restructuring of eating patterns, family support, and, when necessary, medical monitoring. The goal is not only to normalize eating behavior but also to restore a healthy body image and emotional balance.
