Eating Disorders in Adolescents are psychiatric conditions characterized by distorted body image, intense concerns about weight and eating behavior, and the development of unhealthy eating patterns during adolescence. These disorders can significantly affect both physical health and psychosocial development.
In adolescents, eating disorders may present as food restriction, excessive dieting, binge eating episodes, or compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, or misuse of medications. A distorted body image and an intense fear of gaining weight are commonly associated features.
The development of these disorders may involve biological predisposition, individual traits, social media influence, peer pressure, family dynamics, and difficulties in emotional regulation. Physical changes during adolescence may also trigger or exacerbate the condition.
Treatment includes psychotherapy, restructuring of eating habits, family involvement, and, when necessary, medical monitoring. The goal is not only to normalize weight or eating behavior but also to support a healthy body image and emotional balance.
