Mood Disorders

Mood Disorders

Mood Disorders are psychiatric conditions in children and adolescents characterized by emotions that are more intense, prolonged, or unstable than expected. These disorders can significantly affect daily functioning, academic performance, and social relationships.

The most common mood disorders include depression and bipolar disorder. In depressive presentations, symptoms such as persistent low mood, loss of interest, reduced energy, lack of motivation, and negative self-perception may be observed. In bipolar disorder, depressive episodes may alternate with periods of elevated mood, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, and impulsive behaviors.

The development of these disorders may be influenced by genetic predisposition, changes in brain chemistry, stressful life events, and environmental factors. In children and adolescents, symptoms may sometimes present as irritability, restlessness, or behavioral problems, requiring careful clinical assessment.

Treatment is planned according to the child’s age and the severity of symptoms. Psychotherapy, family support, collaboration with schools, and, when necessary, medication are key components of the treatment process. With early and appropriate intervention, mood disorders can be effectively managed and healthy development can be supported.
