Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder in children and adolescents characterized by fluctuations between depressive episodes and elevated mood states (mania or hypomania). These mood shifts have a significant impact on energy levels, thought processes, behavior, and overall daily functioning.

During manic or hypomanic periods, symptoms may include increased energy, reduced need for sleep, rapid thinking and speech, distractibility, inflated self-esteem, and impulsive behaviors. During depressive episodes, symptoms such as low mood, lack of motivation, social withdrawal, fatigue, and hopelessness become more prominent.

In children and adolescents, bipolar disorder may present differently than in adults, often with pronounced irritability, behavioral outbursts, and emotional instability. Therefore, the diagnostic process requires careful and comprehensive clinical evaluation.

Treatment involves psychiatric monitoring, medication, psychotherapy, and family education as key components. The goal is to stabilize mood fluctuations, improve functioning, and enhance quality of life. With appropriate follow-up and treatment, individuals can maintain a healthier developmental trajectory.
