What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder?

There are some children who seem programmed to say “no” to everything. They become stubborn, oppositional, and do the exact opposite of what they are told. Families often say: “Why is this child against everything?” In reality, the child does not truly want to oppose others; they simply do not know how else to cope with the emotions they are struggling with.

Typical behaviors may include:

  • Becoming angry or upset very quickly
  • A constant need to argue
  • Testing rules and displaying challenging behaviors
  • Overreacting when they feel something is unfair
  • Blaming others and struggling to take responsibility

Underlying causes are often difficulties with emotional regulation, accumulated anger, damaged feelings of trust, family conflicts, or accompanying conditions such as ADHD. These children are not “difficult”; they are children who are hurt, exhausted, and overwhelmed by their emotions. What helps them most is: consistent boundaries combined with a calm and supportive way of relating to them.
